Mouthwash may be great for adults and older children, what age is best to start your child on the healthy habit?

We know how important dental health is for your kids. Brushing every morning, after sugary and sticky snacks and before bedtime is encouraged. Some kids even enjoy flossing using flavored dental floss. But how about mouthwash? Typically, mouthwash is not recommended for children under the age of six. Some types of mouthwash for kids contain fluoride. While fluoride is beneficial for preventing tooth decay, having too much too early may result in fluorosis. Fluorosis can happen only when a child’s teeth are still developing, and this condition may affect the texture and color of the teeth. When it comes to new technologies, like laser dentistry, it is always best to talk to your trust dentist first!

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser produces a very exact beam of concentrated laser energy that can treat a wide variety of dental problems. The laser sterilizes and coagulates blood vessels at the same time, thereby reducing the opportunity for infection. Lasers in dentistry can be used for surgical procedures such as a cutting instrument or tissue vaporizer, meaning it melts away tissue it encounters. Safety glasses will be used to protect your eyes from any harm. In many cases, the use of the laser instead of the drill or knife greatly reduces pain during the procedure. Depending upon what you need and your pain tolerance, anesthesia is sometimes unnecessary. (more…)

Many parents are unsure when is right to consider braces for their child.

Most people aren’t born with perfect smiles. In fact, about 90 percent of children will experience overcrowding teeth. While milder cases may not require treatment, those with severe crowding will want to contact their dental specialist. Serious overcrowding can have a negative impact on your child’s smile, increasing their chances of decay and gum disease since it’s harder to thoroughly brush those areas. As permanent teeth come in some children may develop problematic bites. Open bites and overbites can easily be corrected by realigning the jaw with braces. Underbites and cross bites are less common, but also can be treated with orthodontics. (more…)

Dentists have great recommendations for the best toothpaste styles your family should be using.

Daily teeth brushing is important to your dental and oral health – we know that. Toothpaste is what
makes the brushing beneficial. Most contain fluoride, and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). With the possible
health risks and allergies to these ingredients, there are alternative toothpastes that omit these
ingredients. Be sure to read the label if you’re concerned about any of these ingredients. Choosing the
best toothpaste for your family involves some research as not all toothpastes are created equally. There
are off-brand toothpastes that are not recommended by dentists. Each type of toothpaste is designed to
attain different, specific results. (more…)
