Healthy Foods to Naturally Whiten Your Teeth

Naturally Whiten Your Teeth

Naturally brighten your smile with these foods & drinks!

Most people are probably aware of certain beverages that stain your teeth, such as tea, coffee, and red wine. But you may not know that just as some foods and drinks cause dental stains, others help clean and whiten them naturally. They’re not as thoroughly effective as professional teeth whitening products, but they are a cheap alternative and a much healthier remedy that should leave you smiling!

Natural Remedies

  • Strawberries: Strawberries can work wonders to whiten teeth, since they contain an enzyme called malic acid. Try mashing up strawberries and rubbing them on your teeth, leaving it for five minutes then rinsing with water and brushing and flossing as usual.
  • Dairy products: Dairy products, such as yoghurt, milk, and cheese, contain lactic acid, which can help protect teeth against decay. Studies have found that kids who ate yogurt four times per week had less tooth decay than kids who didn’t eat yogurt. Proteins in yogurt can bind to teeth and prevent them from attack by harmful acids that cause cavities. Hard cheeses are best for whitening, since they help remove food particles as well.
  • Fruit: Eating tart fruits such as oranges and pineapples cause the mouth to produce more saliva, which in turn washes teeth clean naturally. Beware of using lemons directly on teeth, because too much acidity can damage teeth.
  • Baking Soda: Though not a food, baking soda functions as a teeth whitener in two ways. Firstly, because of its abrasive nature, baking soda removes built-up plaque on teeth and secondly, the alkaline powder in baking soda can help remove discolorations.

What to Avoid!

Though discoloration of teeth is a part of the aging process, some foods, and beverages, as well as smoking can drastically increase the rate of stains and discoloration. Many are aware that red wine leads to stains on your teeth, but white wine is actually worse. White wine contains more acidity than red, so drinking white wine makes your teeth more likely to absorb stains. Berries, such as blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, cherries, although excellent for your overall health, can stain your teeth. So, be sure to rinse out your mouth thoroughly with water after eating to prevent drastic discoloration.
