Many people, especially parents, ask the question, “when is the best age for braces?” They don’t want their kids to get them too early, as they may need more treatment later on, but getting braces too late may mean their children will have to wear them for a longer period of time as they enter their teen years. While there is no perfect age to get braces, there are a few factors to consider when deciding the best option for your child.
It is recommended that children have their first orthodontic consultation around age seven. This doesn’t mean that kids will get braces this early, but this visit allows you to prepare for possible future treatment. By age seven, most baby teeth have started to come out, and an orthodontist will have a good idea of what the alignment of permanent teeth will look like. Braces or partial teeth aligners may be applied at this stage, but only if your child is having problems due to poor teeth alignment.
Prime Years: Ages 10-14
In general, most children who get braces begin treatment between the ages of ten and 14. By this age, all baby teeth have completely fallen out and the jaw is stable enough to support long-term orthodontic treatment. Teens and pre-teens should be responsible enough to manage their braces without much parental intervention and should be able to get them removed after one and a half to two years.
It’s important to note that you are never too old for braces! Many teens end up getting braces, as do adults in their 20s, 30s, or older. Some adults never had access to orthodontics as kids, and decide to get braces to feel more confident with their smile. As an adult, you will likely need to change your lifestyle in accommodate braces, such as your diet, morning and evening schedules, and some activities you take part in. While it can be daunting to make such a big change as an adult, the short-term sacrifices with be worth the long-term benefits in your confidence and dental health!
