A Look at Natural Toothpastes

Natural toothpastes are less likely to contain artificial dyes.

Dental hygiene products have grown considerably over the years, to the point where it is becoming exceedingly difficult to choose the right one. One question many people are wondering is whether they should choose a regular toothpaste or a natural toothpaste. Do they contain different ingredients? Is one more effective at cleaning your teeth and freshening your breath? Here’s a quick look at the differences between natural and regular toothpastes.

Ingredients

The main difference between natural and conventional toothpastes is the ingredients they contain. Typically, toothpastes do not contain any sugar, as that would contribute to tooth decay. However, most toothpastes contain some kind of sweetener to make the taste more palatable. In regular toothpastes that ingredient is saccharin, and some people prefer to avoid it as its health effects have always been up for debate. Natural toothpastes use sweeteners like xylitol and stevia that come from herbs. Natural toothpastes are also less likely to contain artificial or man-made dyes.

Natural and conventional toothpastes do share some ingredients in common though. Carrageenan is a thickening agent that comes from red seaweed and is found in both products. Both types of toothpaste also contain glycerin, the ingredient that gives the paste its soft texture.

Fluoride

Some natural toothpastes contain fluoride, but most do not. Fluoride is the naturally occurring tooth-strengthening mineral that the American Dental Association (ADA) has recognized as a cavity fighter. Fluoride is what helps remineralize our teeth and reverse decay. Some people are concerned about the health effects of fluoride, especially in higher doses. However, the ADA has found no connection between the fluoride in toothpaste and brain development.

Conclusion

There is no “right” answer when it comes to using a natural or conventional toothpaste. Choosing a toothpaste with fluoride in it is the most teeth-friendly choice you can make. Regardless, the best thing you can do is be an informed consumer when it comes to knowing what is in the products you buy.
