New Year’s Resolutions for Dental Care

New Year's resolutions for dental care
Consider making one of these New Year’s resolutions for dental care and improving your oral health.

Many people like to start a new year with a few resolutions. These can be difficult to stick to, but when you make a resolution that benefits your health, it can be extremely helpful to find ways to commit to that resolution. If you want to take better care of your teeth or gums, there are a few things you can do to maintain excellent oral health. Depending on what you want to improve, you may consider committing to any or all of the following New Year’s resolutions for your dental care.

Schedule Regular Dental Appointments

Booking your next dental appointment is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. If you are experiencing teeth sensitivity or bleeding gums, you should make an appointment as soon as possible. Once you attend your appointment, you can schedule your next one before you leave the office. For the best dental care, you should make one to two dental appointments each year.

Commit to Flossing

Brushing your teeth twice a day isn’t quite enough to keep plaque from building up on your teeth or to remove every food particle from your mouth. To provide your teeth with the best dental care, you also need to floss.

You can help yourself remember to floss by placing a container of floss directly near your toothpaste. You may also keep another container of floss in your purse or your work desk so you can floss at any time of the day.

Cut Back on Sugary Foods

The more sugar a person eats, the more tooth decay they will experience. Cutting back on sugar can help your dental care significantly. The best way to cut back is to reduce the number of sugary treats you buy. You can also swap for sugar-free options: drink sugar-free seltzer instead of soda, or chew sugar-free gum when you want something sweet.

Kick the Tobacco Habit

While it is difficult, quitting smoking can benefit your oral health immensely. Smoking can double your risk for gum disease and is linked to a host of other serious health issues. Pick a day to quit, and remove all tobacco products from your home. Recruit the help of friends or family to help you stop. There are professionals you can go to for advice on quitting if you have trouble doing it alone.

Eat Mouth-Healthy Foods

When you cut back on sugar, you can also resolve to add more orally healthy foods to your diet. Dairy products, which are high in calcium, are great for your teeth. Fibrous foods that produce saliva and scrub away plaque and food particles are also very beneficial.

When you decide on your New Year’s resolutions for your dental care, be sure to start small. Take it one step at a time, and you can commit to better dental health in this new year.
