Learn how to prevent future dental problems.

The best way to ensure your teeth stay healthy for years to come is to take care of them every day! A great smile takes a little bit of effort, but it is easy to take small steps in your daily routine to prevent future dental issues and keep your teeth happy and strong. Continue reading for a few tips for preventing dental problems.

Proper Brushing Technique

We all know that we should be brushing our teeth twice a day, but it’s important that you are using the proper technique. If you are only brushing your teeth for a few seconds in the morning and before bed, you aren’t helping your teeth much. Instead, put on a timer and make sure you brush for two minutes at a time. Make sure to add flossing into your daily routine, as it helps to remove food between your teeth and gums that a toothbrush can’t reach. A few other tips include using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste with fluoride, don’t forget to brush your tongue, and wait 30 minutes after drinking coffee to brush. The acidity of coffee can cause teeth damage if you brush your teeth right after drinking your morning cup.

Watch Out For Certain Foods

In addition to proper oral care, you should also be mindful of how certain food and drinks affect your teeth. Some food and drinks can break down your enamel and cause tooth decay, even if you brush and floss every day. Sugary beverages, (even diet soda,) cause acid in your mouth that breaks down enamel. Do your best to avoid these drinks, as they make your teeth prone to decay.

As for foods, candy is also bad for teeth. While it’s okay to indulge in candy every once in a while, remember to be mindful of the type of candy you choose. For example, sticky and chewy candies and suckers such as jolly ranchers and lollipops should be avoided. Because these candies stay in your mouth for longer, they give the acid and bacteria from the sugar more time to damage your teeth.

Don’t Overbrush

Did you know that you can actually overbrush your teeth? You may think that you’re keeping your teeth nice and clean, but brushing more than four times a day can cause damage to your teeth. You can also brush too hard, which results in damage to your enamel and gums. While it’s great that you are trying to maintain healthy teeth, remember to brush twice a day and without putting too much pressure on your teeth and gums.
